On today’s All About Real Estate edition of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio Show, our hosts Bryan Nonni and Todd Schnick are joined by Judy Mozen, president of Handcrafted Homes. Judy is also the national president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and Atlanta Home Remodeling Company.

The Atlanta Home Remodeling Company is a unique, boutique-sized company that specializes in its clients. In addition to fulfilling the needs, wants and desires clients have when it comes to remodeling their home, the company also educates customers during the remodeling process, which makes them better homeowners down the road. Atlanta Home Remodeling Company is also a design/build firm, which means that the company designs 90 percent of what they remodel.

In her position as a full time remodeler, Judy’s clients are excited to be working with an industry professional with so many certifications and more than 30 years of experience in the building and remodeling world. As a woman serving as president of a construction-based company, Judy says that she has been received well in her travels around the country. She adds, “They already know me, they know I hold certified positions and that I have knowledge; for instance, as a green certified professional about indoor air quality. So they aren’t questioning what I know. I think going in and really trying to inspire is one of the reasons I’ve been greeted amazingly well.”

One of Judy’s other major responsibilities is with NARI. For those unfamiliar with NARI, the organization seeks to advance and promote the remodeling industry’s professionalism, product and vital public purpose. A typical day for Judy includes many emails and constantly networking with NARI members so that they know she is reachable and available to them. Judy also leads NARI’s executive committee and works as an officer liaison with several other NARI committees.

During her year as NARI president, Judy intends to focus on workforce development. Since coming out of the recession, there has been a shortage of skilled trade workers, specifically project managers and experienced carpenters. Judy feels that if NARI and other remodeling companies could become more inclusive and more diverse, the workforce shortage would be solved. One of the main groups that could be the answer to helping the shortage is the youth. In the past, large numbers of young people were intrigued by home building and carpentry mainly because of school drafting and shop courses. With budget cuts, many of these courses are no longer available. Judy adds, “We are hoping that we can get technical schools affiliated with the high schools. One of the biggest things we want is to have young people realize that you can walk out of high school  and get training in a technical school and walk into jobs starting at $40,000 and end up during your career well above $100,000.” The other two groups that Judy wants to focus attention on while in office at NARI are women and legal immigrants.

Judy will undoubtedly return for another interview with Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. For additional information on her Handcrafted Homes, visit www.HandcraftedHomes-inc.com.
