What Will Make Green Stick?
Hello Atlanta! I’m blogging from the National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) national convention in Philadelphia the week. Many of the nations top real estate editors and reporters are here discussing industry trends. One of today’s conversations centered around the renewed craze over green building and green products. You may recall a big green housing push in the late 1970s, so the question is, what will make the green movement “stick” this time? The answer:
- Energy prices have increased and they are not going to come down by much.
- The price difference between green products and non-green products is negligable.
- Selection has greatly improved for green products — more to choose from and they are pretty
- The political environment has changed. In the past, green was viewed as a “liberal” issue, today it viewed as more of a “human” issue. An overwhelming amount of the population is concerned about global warming.
No doubt that green homes and green development will continue to be a hot housing trend amongst Atlanta’s new home builders, remodelers and developers. Consumers have become more savvy and they are seeking energy efficiency and responsible construction and development.
