I would also suggest closing in exposed crawl spaces. Many homes in Atlanta are built with a partial basement + a dirt crawl space that is vented to the outside world. This dirt crawl space with venting to the outside world is a huge cause of mold growth in many homes (we just went through this process a year or so in our own home). Sealing the vents of a crawl space and making it water tight (through plastic or concrete with plastic underneath) will provide a basis for drying out your basement and home.
