The Senior Population is Expected to Double in Coming Years

The Atlanta Business Chronicle recently published an article about the aging population of the world. Their findings? According to the U.S. Census Bureau the world’s 65 and older population is projected to triple by mid-century, from 516 million in 2009 to an astounding 1.53 billion in 2050.

In particular, the elderly population in the US will more than double by the year 2050. This means in the year 2050 eighty-nine million adults over the age of 65 will be living in the U.S. This number contributes to the 8% overall growth of the 65+ population in the world.

On the other hand,  the U.S. Census Bureau reports the under 15 population in the United States is expected to fall below the older population with only 85 million.

In the article by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Wan He, a demographer in the Census Bureau’s Population Division, said, “This shift in the age structure of the world’s population poses challenges to society, families, businesses, health care providers and policymakers to meet the needs of aging individuals.”
