Spotlight On: The Atlanta Botanical Garden

In the last 35 years, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has become a treasure in the heart of Midtown. The garden was incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit organization, with a mission to “develop and maintain plant collections for the purposes of display, education, conservation, research and enjoyment.” It has done just so throughout the years, offering a variety of exhibitions, events and classes for friends and family alike.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden came to be by a petition of civic-minded Atlanta citizens proposing the bestowment of a botanical garden in the local neighborhood. Throughout the years, the garden has grown in acreage and the exhibits and events they offer, leading to a dramatic increase in guests and awareness.
The contents of the Atlanta Botanical Garden change each month in order to remain seasonal and entertaining. This cycle of change provides a unique experience with each visit. Through the garden’s website, visitors can explore what’s currently in bloom, the various plant collections available for visitation, “plant profiles” and more.
During the summer months, many parents are on the hunt for things to do with their children on the weekends. The Atlanta Botanical Garden offers a variety of events and classes for children that are both fun and educational. Some of the summer 2014 events include Magical Garden Stories in the Children’s Garden Amphitheatre, Endangered Species Day, Planting a Wonderland and more. Other events occur on a weekly or monthly basis, such as the Garden Stroller Strut, Storybook Time and Treasure Hunts.
For parents seeking a fun way to keep their kids entertained and busy during the work week, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens offers summer camp sessions through June and July. Children ages 4 to 10 have the opportunity to participate in a variety of different themed camp weeks. This summer’s camp themes include Sprouting Chefs, Habitat Explorers, Junior Garden Chefs and Adventures in the Garden.
Not all of the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s events are directed at children, however. Each Thursday evening from May to September, the garden hosts Cocktails in the Garden – the most beautiful cocktail party in the city. Lasting from 6 until 10 p.m., attendees get to experience a chef demo in the Edible Garden and other surprise cultural performances. If live music is more of your thing, the garden will be putting on an outdoor concert series on the Great Lawn. The series is considered Atlanta’s most intimate outdoor music event where guests enjoy music amongst their friends, flowers and nature.
Not only is the garden a great way to spend the day or evening, it is the perfect place to host your next event. The Atlanta Botanical Garden is home to fifteen beautiful indoor and outdoor event spaces that are sure to impress your guests. Venues range in capacity from 10 to 500, each with a unique charm perfect for weddings, galas and meetings alike.
For those interested in getting involved, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Positions range from interacting with visitors to assisting the horticulture staff, so there is something to appeal to all interests and passions. Along with giving back to the organization, volunteers will be able to take field trips and workshops with fellow volunteers. All summer long, the garden will be operating Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., staying open until 10 pm on Thursdays. Though the garden is normally closed on Mondays, they will operate on Monday holidays such as Labor Day, Memorial Day and Columbus Day. Admission is $18.95 for adults, $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12 and free for children under the age of 3 and Garden Members.
