Sony Ericsson moves to Atlanta
Sony Ericsson, the mobile phone giant recently announced that it will move its headquarters to Atlanta from the Raleigh-Durham (Research Triangle) area in North Carolina. The move will allow the wireless handset maker to consolidate jobs although it is uncertain as to how many of the companies’ 425 employees will be asked to make the move. If even a small fraction of employees relocate, this will be good for the Atlanta real estate market.
Sony Ericsson currently has 18 employees working in the Sovereign building located at 3344 Peachtree Street in Buckhead. It is not clear at this point if they will move their headquarters to the building as well. A representative from Sony Ericsson said the decision to move to Atlanta was based on the companies’ presence in the Atlanta market as well as AT&T’s presence, one of the companies’ largest customers.
Sony Ericson’s closure of its headquarters in Raleigh-Durham is part of a plan the company announced in April to cut staff worldwide by 20-percent.
