Seville Receives New Award for Druid Hills Remodeling Project

Carl Seville of Seville Consulting has continued to receive recognition for his sustainable renovation and expansion of a 1918 brick bungalow in the historic district of the Druid Hills area of Metro Atlanta. His latest award is an Honorable Mention in the Green Remodeling, over $250,000, category of the 2007 Remodeling Design Awards, sponsored by REMODELING Magazine and Marvin Windows. There were 240 entries in the competition which included a green category for the first time. Judges found Seville’s remodel to be extremely sensitive to the neighborhood. “The finish detail is great, but the construction quality goes beyond the finishes,” one judge said. The award will be presented at the Remodeling Show in Las Vegas in mid-October and is featured in the September issue of REMODELING.

In addition to recycling materials such as vintage roof tiles and salvaged brick, Seville used energy-efficient and green principles to upgrade the infrastructure. His firm focuses on mainstream green, which is of particular interest to owners of traditional houses in Atlanta. “Clients don’t want things that look different,” Seville says. “You can make any house extremely efficient with just a little extra effort.” Seville, founder and former vice president of SawHorse Inc. of Atlanta for 25 years, enlisted the help of SawHorse with the project. That firm had become extensively involved in EarthCraft renovations during Seville’s final years there. Earlier Seville received the Homes Across America Integrated Design Award for “extensive commitment to resource efficiency” for the bungalow. Homes that are designed and constructed with consideration to the interactions of each component, all-around emphasis on resource efficiency, and using a team approach are designated as an “Integrated Design”, according to a Homes Across America spokesperson. In addition, the Druid Hills home was named “Remodeled Home of the Year” at the National Association of Home Builders’ 8th Annual National Green Building Conference, was the featured showcase house at the 2005 Southern Building Show in Atlanta, and was also a finalist in the residential category of the 2006 Environmental Design and Construction Magazine Excellence in Design Awards. Also, PATH (Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing) conducted a case study on the project and published it on the Tech Practices page ofits PATHnet internet site.

Seville, who lives and has his office in Decatur, operates Seville Consulting, a company with the goal of helping homeowners and building professionals create healthy, efficient, and durable buildings by incorporating sustainable practices into their homes and businesses. Recipient of the 2005 and 2007 Green Remodeling Advocate of the Year and the 2004 and 2006 National Green Building Awards for Residential Remodeling from the National Association of Home Builders, Seville has over the years earned five Excellence in Design Awards from Environmental Design and Construction Magazine, the Southface Energy Institute Award of Excellence for Environmental Stewardship, and the 2006 EarthCraft House Leadership Award.
