Rosebud Co. of Atlanta to Restore Historic Floors of Montpelier Mansion
![]()
Rosebud Co of Atlanta has been selected for the restoration of the aged pine floors of the mansion home of President James Madison and his wife Dolley on their Montpelier estate in the Virginia countryside. Built in three stages, Montpelier was completed by the early 1800s and served as a focal point for James and Dolley Madison during his presidency and after his retirement. Madison, who was the fourth president of the United States, is known as the “Father of the Constitution”, while his wife was the first to be called the First Lady.
The three-year restoration project will bring the home back to the look it had during the Madisons’ residency. Restoration work on the floors will begin in late May and is scheduled for completion well before the reopening ceremonies in September of 2008. The selection of Rosebud Co. for this project underscores the company’s unique and unmatched ability to handle period restoration using Passive Refinishing. Developed exclusively by Rosebud Co., Passive Refinishing allows for the complete restoration of wood floors of historic properties without the loss of wood using traditional methods. Michael Purser, owner of Rosebud Co., said that Passive Refinishing is environmentally responsible and has been an invaluable option for the successful restoration of numerous historic properties. Included in this list are Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens of Akron, Oh.; The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum of Palm Beach, Fl.; The Patterson House, home of The Washington Club of Washington, D.C.; and Rhodes Hall of Atlanta.
There is extensive information on the restoration of the Montpelier mansion at www.montpelier.org, and those interested will now be able to follow the progress of the restoration of the wood floors on the site.
