Organize Your Holiday Closet

holiday storageUnfortunately, the holiday season is behind us and it’s time to take down all of those beautiful, festive decorations and store them for the next year. And, if you are anything like the average homeowner, that storage closet isn’t exactly the most organized room in the house. It is definitely difficult to keep it clutter-free when you go in and out for specific items every holiday or season. So, to help make things easier for you, here are some basic closet organization tips from Atlanta real estate forum:

  • Label it – if most of your decorations are kept in boxes and other storage bins, label the outside of them, and make sure you store them with the label facing out.
  • Clear it out – if you still have broken lights or malfunctioning decorative pieces that you have been holding on to because you will fix it one day, then throw it away. If you haven’t taken the time to fix it yet, then you aren’t going to. This will help free up more space on the shelves for the decorations that you do use every year.
  • Speaking of shelves- use them! One of the greatest tools you can have in any closet is a functional shelf system. Incorporate shelves of varying heights to accommodate both large boxes/items and smaller pieces. Plus, it is a good idea to put items that are used most often at or near eye-level, so that you don’t have to waste too much time looking for them. Also, organize things in regards to weight – heavier items on the bottom and get lighter as you go up.
  • Group it – Try to categorize items and place them in the closet together. For example, place all Easter decorations together in one area of the closet and Christmas decorations together in another area and so on.
  • Keep a folding step stool in the closet to provide easy access to the items stored on the top shelf.

These few tips are just the tip of the iceberg in a whole industry that is devoted to organizing closets. If you want to seek out more detailed help, you can easily head down to Lowe’s or Home Depot to get some hands-on advice on organizing a closet. If you don’t want to do it yourself, there are a myriad of companies around the Atlanta area that will come to your house and completely re-design your closet for you.  Whichever way you choose, just make sure it is a finished project that you are comfortable with.
