How to Select a Home Remodeler

atlanta remodelersWhile the Atlanta real estate market has slowed in recent years, one area that is picking up is home remodeling. Instead of selling a home, some people are choosing to stay put and renovate their spaces. With so many remodeler choices, how do you know which one to select?

Mark Buelow, president of Distinctive Remodeling Solutions and current president of NARI’s Atlanta Chapter has several suggestions for homeowners who want to hire a competent, qualified remodeler.

Choose a Member of a Reputable Professional Association

Its members adhere to a code of ethics and also participate in continuing education programs to keep their skills sharp and to stay up to date on the latest tools and techniques available. Members who are certified through NARI possess skill and knowledge in a broad range of business management and technical skill areas.

Other professional associations include the National Kitchen and Bath Association, American Society of Interior Designers, and Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association (for landscaping projects).

Referrals

Talk to your friends and neighbors who have undertaking remodeling projects. Were they pleased with the work? Was it done professionally, on time and within the agreed-upon budget? Word of mouth referrals can be extremely valuable when deciding which remodeling firm to hire, especially if you speak with others who completed remodeling projects similar to yours.

References

Ask the contractor for references and then call them. Go back several years to get a sense of the company’s stability and reputation for customer service. Also be sure there are no complaints filed against a contractor with the Better Business Bureau and/or the Office of Consumer Affairs.

Getting Started

After you’ve made your selection, secure a written contract from the remodeler, detailing what they will do and what they won’t do. Be sure a complete list of materials is included, along with the start and expected completion date. Finally, be sure a warranty covering materials and workmanship is included in the contract.

Taking on a home remodeling project can be challenging. By carefully researching home remodelers and selecting a qualified professional company that best meets your needs, you will minimize your stress, better manage your budget and be well on your way to achieving the home improvements you desire.
