Haven Properties Energy Tip: Easing the Transition from the Incandescent Light Bulb
On December 18, 2007, the U.S. Congress passed an energy bill that, among other things, phases out the incandescent light bulb – the traditional bulb designed by Thomas Edison. In the coming years, all of us will begin using compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Of course, Haven Properties has been suggesting the use of these energy saving bulbs for years, so we’ve heard some of the questions. Yes, they cost more to purchase, but the savings in energy and frequent replacement costs more than make up the difference. CFLs will not last as long if you flick them on and off, so it’s best to leave them on for at least 15 minutes. And yes, they do contain a small amount of mercury. Maine’s Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management developed procedures to follow in case one breaks. CFLs must be properly disposed of, and can be recycled at any IKEA store.
