Dekalb County Townhome Communities Benefit from Redevelopment
Avondale, which was once a quiet, sleepy community in Dekalb County, is now one of Atlanta’s most sought-after districts, and there are two new townhome communities that offer residents prime location in this trendy neighborhood. Berkeley Village and North Village are conveniently located where the residents reap the benefits of owning a new townhome in Decatur- Avondale Livable Centers Initiative (LCI). After many long years of planning the LCI redevelopment program will begin this industrial face-lift to rejuvenate the Avondale area. The LCI plan was created to breathe life and livability into the area by adding housing options, entertainment and employment centers.
In February 2002 the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) awarded the City of Decatur an LCI grant to produce a comprehensive master plan that would assist the community in reaching its goals to create a quality, balanced environment by establishing policies to encourage mixed-use development in and around the Avondale MARTA station such as affordable housing, neighborhood commercial, and interactive recreational facilities. By connecting homes, shops and offices, improving access to transit and emphasizing the pedestrian lifestyle, this plan has increased the desirability of the redevelopment of the land.
This exciting plan builds on the successes of the City’s revitalization efforts, and has already attracted Century Retail to commit to build 150,000 square feet of retail including a new Publix that should open in early 2009. This is the first of many improvements coming to the area. Once complete, neighborhoods will enjoy higher levels of employment, more availability of shopping and dining facilities and a greater range of travel options.
Obviously, this is one sought-after location in Atlanta real estate. And the beginning of this redevelopment makes now an opportune time to purchase a new townhome in Decatur at Berkeley Village or North Village. Once more retail and entertainment outlets fill in the area, the price of the homes will undoubtedly increase, and you won’t be able to find the fantastic deal that you can now.
