Couple Finds Freedom at Cottages at Heron Bay

Though both Lynn and Pamela Pruitt are not ready to retire, the couple was ready for the lifestyle change that came with moving into the Cottages at Heron Bay. This active-adult community that is part of the Heron Bay Golf and Country Club in Henry County, came with the freedom from house and yard work that has made the working couple’s life easier.

“We loved the active adult concept that means someone else keeps up the yard,” said Pamela Pruitt. “We also liked having close neighbors but a floor plan that gives us privacy.”

The Pruitts were living in South Carolina when their daughter discovered Heron Bay four years ago. On her suggestion, they toured the property and soon made plans to move in. The two-bedroom plan they purchased was already finished, with an open interior plan that wraps around a private courtyard.

“We did look at other plans,” said Lynn Pruitt, “but this was the one that caught our eye because of its openness. It also had a lot of add-ons – like the rear covered patio and sun tunnel in the bathroom – that didn’t come standard in other houses.”

Off the Pruitts’ foyer is a home office; just beyond, are the living room, dining area and the kitchen with granite counter tops. Oversized windows, a sliding glass door and skylights in the kitchen allow the natural light to stream inside. In the roomy master, the couple has plenty of space for their king-sized bed. The spacious walk-in closet and large bath with a garden tub and separate shower are also part of their private retreat. From the first time they saw the property, the Pruitts gravitated to the courtyard that is visible from most of the rooms in the house.

“I love that you can see outside from the office, the master, the dining room and the kitchen,” said Pamela Pruitt. “And from our spare bedroom and bath, we can look across to the golf course.”

The private outdoor space has room for a grill and dining table. But when they’re feeling social, they move to the front porch, where they can greet their neighbors.

“It’s really the best of both worlds,” said Lynn Pruitt. “We can be in the courtyard and watch the golfers if we want some privacy, or we can sit out front and see all our neighbors.”

The Cottages has its own clubhouse for neighborhood gatherings as well as full access to the amenities of the larger Heron Bay community. The Pruitts have taken advantage of the amenities, joining the country club and enjoying the pool, tennis courts and golf course.

“They also have an events coordinator who hosts parties and gatherings,” said Lynn Pruitt. “You only have to attend one of them to want to go back. We’ll be at the ‘50s-themed party coming up. It’s a great way to get involved with the community.”
