Cobb County Schools Named AP Honor Schools
Cobb is a popular county to relocate to when moving to Atlanta and buying a new home. One of the main reasons it is so popular is its school system. Seven Cobb County high schools were listed recently on the Georgia Department of Education’s list of 2010 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools. This list recognizes statewide growth and increased access to AP programs. During the 2008-09 school year Cobb administered more than 12,000 AP exams, up from 7,603 in 2006. The average mean score improved from 2.86 in 2008 to 2.94 in 2009.
Here is the list of 7 schools;
- Allatoona High is listed among AP Challenge Schools, for schools with fewer than 900 students offering AP classes in all four academic areas.
- Campbell High and McEachern High schools were named AP Access & Support Schools for having 30 percent of AP test takers that are Black or Hispanic and at least 30 percent of all exams scoring 3 or higher.
- Four Cobb schools – Harrison High, Lassiter High, Walton High and Wheeler High schools – were named AP Merit Schools for having at least 20 percent of students taking AP exams and at least half the exams scoring a 3 or higher.
Cobb County boasts that its Advanced Placement Certified Schools (APCS) program have standards more rigorous than the state’s, and thus challenging schools to increase access to AP exams. The Cobb County School District is the second largest school system in Georgia, educating more than 106,000 students a year.
