Atlanta Ranks as a Top City with the Most ENERGY STAR Buildings

energy starThe countdown to Earth Day continues with only three weeks left until the big day, April 22, 2010. Hopefully you took our advice from last week and have already begun celebrating the holiday by picking 5 for the environment. Well, this week’s Earth Day-inspired post is less of a take-action and more of a pat-on-the-back for Atlanta as a city.

According to the recent rankings released by the EPA, Atlanta is #9 in the nation for having the most Energy Star buildings. Energy Star certified structures use approximately one-third less energy, and as of 2009, Atlanta had 102 buildings completed.

Energy Star labeled buildings in Atlanta achieved significant reductions in their energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. These buildings represent more than 29.6 million square feet, and will save an estimated $23.9 million annually in lower energy bills, and avoid over 24,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy Star buildings and plants are America’s energy all-stars – they save more, use less and help reduce green house gas emissions.

Great job Atlanta! We are obviously on the right path to reducing our carbon footprint, and it’s pretty amazing that we are a national leader for the movement. Keep these numbers in mind when you are building your new home or renovating your current one, and be sure to invest in Energy Star appliances and products. Let’s do what we can to keep Atlanta a leader in the green movement!

Happy Earth Day 2010!
