Atlanta is in the middle for home prices
A recent report by the Center for Housing Policy ranks nearly 200 metropolitan areas for housing affordability. Their purpose is to draw attention to workers who provide vital services — teachers, firefighters, police officers, retail sales workers, nurses, restaurant workers and others — who cannot afford to live in the communities they serve.
Atlanta real estate landed pretty much in the middle of the pack at number 100. Our median home price was listed at $185,000. That means neither a registered nurse, an elementary school teacher nor a fire fighter could qualify for a mortgage on the median priced home based on their annual income. The income needed was calculated using the average prevailing interest rate and assuming a 10 percent downpayment.
