Go Play In the Road with Atlanta Streets Alive

Ditch your car and come play in the street with other Atlantans on Sunday, May 23. Between 1 and 6 p.m., just under two miles of Edgewood Avenue between Peachtree and Boulevard, as well as some blocks of neighboring streets, will be closed to all motorized vehicles and turn into a festival of activity.

Atlanta Streets Alive envisioned this concept after being inspired by the ciclovia in Bogota, Colombia. Each Sunday, Bogota’s streets are closed to cars for community-oriented events and activities. This trend has taken off in other cities around the world, and Atlanta’s event hopes to garner the same success.

The event is backed by some great sponsors and has secured the support of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Though this is scheduled as a one-time event, Atlanta Streets Alive hopes to make it a regular activity.

This is the perfect family activity for anyone who lives in one of the Atlanta condo communities downtown. Atlanta Streets Alive is completely free. Some of the activities you can participate in along the closed road include: street hockey, rollerblading, sidewalk painting, belly dancing, double dutch, kung fu, a recycling relay race, breakdancing and fitness drills. If you want to participate in a more passive manner you can observe the roaming street performers, musicians and acrobats.

There are many MARTA stations convenient to Edgewood Avenue, so leave the car at home Sunday and enjoy a day of playing in the streets!
