The first guest on today’s Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio show is Marci Reed, the chief development and communications officer for Southface, a non-profit that is dedicated to sustainability and green building. Originally started as the Georgia Solar Coalition 36 years ago, Southface is now geared towards providing education, research, advocacy and technical assistance on how to build healthy, energy- and water-efficient buildings and communities.
One of Southface’s most notable achievements in the green building industry is its creation of the EarthCraft program, which was started 15 years ago. This program was developed in conjunction with the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association when the housing market was booming in Atlanta, and it just certified its 30,000th EarthCraft home this year! The EarthCraft program is now moving into the sustainable preservation arena, as it aims to help preserve historic buildings and homes while also making them more Earth-friendly. Southface is a membership-based organization, and it depends on these members and its supporters both financially and for new ideas. The organization provides many events and activities for its members, and it also hosts tours and training opportunities at its Midtown campus.

The next guest on today’s radio show is Stacey Lucas, the director of marketing for The Children’s Museum of Atlanta. As one of the first businesses to commit to calling downtown Atlanta home after the Olympics, the museum is now in a great location for families.
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is geared towards children eight and under and their caregivers and it’s designed to be a place where children can explore the world around them through hands-on learning. The museum has many permanent exhibits, as well as the Morph Gallery, which offers new exhibits throughout the year.
Permanent exhibits at the museum include Leaping Into Learning, a gallery designed for children five and under; Tools for Solutions, which teaches children about engineering and physics; Fundamentally Food, an exhibit that helps children to understand how food gets to their table; and Let Your Creativity Flow, an area that features a paint wall, a dress-up space and a special type of sand that allows children to create sculptures.
Currently in the Morph Gallery is Outside the Box, an exhibit that features hundreds of boxes for children to use to build things, and the Maker Space, an area that has hundreds of random supplies that allow a child’s imagination to run wild while they create whatever they can dream up.
The Imaginators, a group of educators with a theater background who have a passion for teaching children and helping them learn through play, are what makes this museum unique. They perform mini musicals that help to reinforce whatever the children are currently learning about, they provide literacy and science education programs and they can be found on the floor of the museum interacting and teaching the children as they play. This group has a desire to teach children how fun learning can be, and they want to help create the next generation of innovators.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Ticket prices are $12.75 plus tax per person, but group discount rates are available. The museum also offers free admission and extended hours on Target Tuesdays, which take place once each month throughout the year.
