A booming business

KNOWAtlantalogo

Atlanta, it seems, has become a major attraction for retiring baby boomers. KNOWAtlanta’s Summer issue has a noteworthy story titled “Atlanta — the New Florida” in which the writer, Pam Keene, points out that “according to the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Aging Atlanta project, the number of metro Atlanta residents age 55 and better will double between now and 2030.” The U.S. Census backs that up, reporting that “Georgia has the fastest-growing active adult population, by percentage, of any state east of Colorado.” Atlanta home builders like Jim Chapman Communities, Del Webb Communities and Millard Bowen Co. are responding by creating homes that cater to the needs and interests of older adults offering ranch plans with split bedroom layouts for privacy, and neighborhoods with a host of amenities including activities centers with fitness area, indoor and outdoor pools, walking trails and more. Not only are baby boomers finding the housing choices favorable, the metro Atlanta area’s reputation for excellent health care facilities, moderate climate, and numerous cultural and entertainment choices are important factors as well.
