Atlanta Braves officials are planning to hit a home run with the construction of the team’s new stadium in Cobb County. With construction deadlines announced, nationwide stadium tours completed and additional land purchased, officials have no plans of striking out when the Braves open the 2017 season at home.
This week, WXIA-TV reported that the Atlanta Braves released new documents containing targeted construction dates for the new stadium. General contractors must have their proposals in by Thursday, May 8, as officials plan to make a decision no later than May 27. Clearing of the stadium site is scheduled to being on July 15, with grading and site work beginning on Sept. 4. Actual stadium construction is slated to start on Feb. 18, 2015 with a completion date of Jan. 25, 2017. The Braves will host a soft opening soon after, with the stadium’s grand opening being held on March 31, 2017.
Atlanta Braves officials have traveled to eight different stadiums and arenas around the country to gather information and ideas for the design of the new stadium. One standout feature that officials instantly wanted to implement came from the Yankees’ stadium, which honors their tradition throughout the venue. The Braves have already hired an archivist to ensure that the new stadium showcases the best moments in the team’s history.
The development team also noted that they want to create intimacy in the new stadium by having fewer seats overall and by placing an emphasis on premium seating, while making everyone closer to the action on the field.
A final feature that officials want the new stadium to possess is a unique design that will be exclusive to the Braves, their fans and the city of Atlanta. While officials haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly what that design will be, their hope is that it will be authentic to Atlanta while being able to embrace the entire Southeast region and make fans from all over feel at home.
Located at the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285 near Cumberland Mall, the new Braves stadium is planned as a 42,000-seat venue surrounded by an entertainment complex. On Thursday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the Braves closed on an additional 25 acres of land near the stadium site. These additional acres, which are planned as a combination of parking and later-phase development, are near the site of the original 57 acres, but not adjacent to them. The purchase of these 25 additional acres brings the total land acquired by the Atlanta Braves to 82 acres.
